Causal assurance for maritime operational decisions

ICI Maritime applies the ICI method to operational environments where conditions change quickly, evidence arrives from different sources and a plausible decision may still depend on a fragile assumption.

The problem

Maritime decisions combine procedures, sensor data, communications, human reports, equipment condition and time pressure. Failures often emerge from interactions among these elements rather than from one isolated mistake. A static checklist can confirm that information exists without proving that the decision remains robust when one input changes.

How ICI approaches it

ICI models the decision context, separates observations from assumptions, tests causal links under changed conditions and retains confirmed failure mechanisms for later voyages, inspections or scenarios. It is particularly useful for asking which evidence actually carries a decision and what happens when that evidence becomes unavailable or contradictory.

Operational example

A cargo, machinery or navigation decision appears safe under normal telemetry. ICI can re-test the reasoning after removing one sensor, degrading communications or changing an operational constraint. The difference between the runs helps identify whether the original decision relied on a single fragile source.

ICI Maritime is decision-support research. It does not replace the Master, qualified officers, approved procedures, statutory requirements or safety-critical human authority.
